This line is often used to discourage language learners from studying pronunciation seriously. You didn't grow up in an English-speaking country, so why bother trying to get your English vowels right?

学習者たちが真剣に発音を学ぼうとしているとき、そこに冷や水を掛けるかのように用いられるのが、この「外国人だから」という線引きだ。英語圏の国で育ったわけでもないのに、なぜ、わざわざ英語の母音を正しくしようとするのか？

There is no reason why you can't speak a foreign language with a perfect, natural accent.

You will need at least some talent for imitating sounds (if you can imitate people in your own language, that's a very good sign).

However, if you just don't have the knack, you can largely make up for it with persistence and a little technology.

For example, you can record your voice with your computer and compare it with the proper pronunciation (if you're learning American English, you can use PerfectPronunciation for that).

You will also need to study phonetics.

Myth #4: "As a beginner, you're bound to make a lot of mistakes" | Antimoon.com

This is often given as justification of the "Mistakes are OK" myth. The reasoning is that mistakes are a part of learning, therefore it is pointless to try to avoid them.

「間違えても大丈夫だよ」という神話を正当化するために、この「初心者なのだから、たくさん間違えるのは仕方ないよ」という考えが持ち出される。ミスは学習の一部なのだから、それを避けようとするのは無意味なことだ、という論法だ。

While you cannot eliminate mistakes completely, you can speak and write with very few mistakes, even if you are a beginner.

The trick is to put input before output.

If a student in a language class does not want to speak, the teacher will normally assume they are shy, and will encourage (sometimes force) them to speak.

He'll tell the student: "Speak and don't worry about mistakes".

Mistakes are not harmless.

Every time you say an incorrect phrase in a foreign language, you increase the probability that you will say that phrase again. Therefore, if you speak with mistakes, you can easily teach yourself bad grammar.

A lot of people think it's more important to improve your fluency than to improve your correctness.

If you follow this path, after some time you may find you can speak the language with ease, but it will be largely your own version of the language ― not correct language as it's spoken by native speakers.

Sadly, the importance of input has been greatly underestimated in the past years.

The monopoly of the Communicative Approach in English language teaching means that students are expected to speak in class and write compositions almost from the first lesson, even though they have had almost no chance to absorb the grammar and vocabulary of English.

A lot of people seem to think that being in a foreign country means that you automatically learn the country's language well.

Perhaps the most prominent people who believe in this "common-sense truth" are European parents who pay a lot of money to send their children to language schools in England, expecting that they will come back speaking fluent English.

Most immigrants in America don't speak English very well, even after living there for 20 years.

Being in a foreign country only forces you to learn what is necessary to survive ― the ability to understand everyday language and just enough speaking skills to order pizza and communicate with your co-workers or co-students.

外国に身を置くことは、人々になんとかやっていくのに必要なものを学ばせるくらいの強制力しか持たない。「なんとかやっていく」とは、日々の生活に出てくる言葉を理解でき、ピザを注文したり、同僚やクラスメイトとやりとりするので精一杯という会話能力のことだ。

The rest is up to you, your motivation and ability to learn ― which means that you're not much better off than someone who's learning the language in his own country.

In addition, being in a foreign country often forces you to say incorrect sentences, because it forces you to speak, even if you make a lot of mistakes.

When you're in a foreign country, you cannot decide that you will temporarily stop talking to people and focus on writing practice (which would enable you to learn correct grammar better than speaking, because you could take as much time as you needed to look up correct phrases on the Web or in dictionaries). You have to speak, because your life depends on it.

By making mistakes, you reinforce your bad habits, and after a couple of years of saying things like "He make tea?", it's really hard to start speaking correctly.

間違いを重ねていくことで悪癖はより強いものになる。そして、2～3年も"He make tea?"のような言い方をしたあとでは、正しく話し始めようとしてもそれはかなり難しい。

It is important to remember that native speakers will not correct your mistakes. Instead, they will try to be nice and try to understand you, no matter how bad your grammar is.

While going to another country may seem like a sure-fire way to master a foreign language, it is not so. Without sufficient motivation, you will learn very little and are likely to end up speaking in an understandable way, but with lots of mistakes.

他の国に行くことは外国語を習得するためのハズレのない方法のように思われるかもしれないが、そうではない。必要にして十分なモチベーションがなければ、そう多くのことは学べないだろう。そして、理解できる程度の会話は出来るようになるだろうが、そこにはたくさんの間違いを含んでいるだろう。

On the other hand, if you have the motivation, you might as well simulate a foreign-language environment in your own home with foreign-language TV and the Internet.

その一方で、そういった十分なモチベーションを持っているならば、外国語のテレビやインターネットを使って自分の国において外国語の環境を再現してもよい。

Such an environment will be safer, because it will not force you to speak and reinforce your mistakes. Instead, you can learn at your own pace and concentrate on pronunciation, input and writing before you start speaking.

そういった環境ならば安全だろう。なぜなら、話すことを強制されないだろうし、間違いをよりひどいものにしないからだ。それどころか、会話をするようになる前に、自分自身のペースで学べ、発音やインプット、ライティングにも集中できる。

すべてのことを考え合わせると、自分自身に動機を与えることが出来て、なおかつ、学んでいる言語で話すことのできる機会を見つけることが出来るとすれば、外国に行くよりも自国で学ぶほうがより安全な選択肢と言えるだろう。（また、より費用が安く済む）

After you've learned to speak the language fluently, you can go abroad to polish your listening skills and make your vocabulary a bit more native-like.

So I have a question for you. What problems do you have when trying to explain when something happens?

Hi, phrasemix. It's @rhb4.

It is generally said that the present perfect, the present progressive and the 'future tense' are hard to understand for Japanese. I think so, too.

Firstly, the present perfect doesn't have a precise Japanese word in translation. It's translated as '現在完了', which literally means 'present completion', but it often makes it very difficult for the learners to grasp its meaning. So they can't figure out whether it refers to the present or to the past.

Secondly, the present progressive is usually explained in a way that it expresses someone or something is 'in the middle of doing something.' That's a correct explanation, but not enough.

As you know, the present progressive can be used for many other expressions. That is, repeated events in temporary contexts, progress of change, regular but not planned actions with indefinite frequency adverbs (such as always, constantly and forever) , actions in the near future and politeness.

Despite of its varieties, most of the learners consider them as exceptional uses of this tense, because they don't mean 'in the middle of doing something'. Actually, the tenses represent a contrast of temporal references, but in reality the perfect and the progressive are not the tenses but aspects.

As a result, many Japanese learners have been struggling against this two 'tenses' and it's still hard to get the point even now.

Thirdly, 'the future tense' is also complicated. One of the most common errors is the constant over-use of 'will'. One of the reasons is that the meanings of 'will' are secondary to time meanings.

Just in my view, 'will' is NOT a tense but a modal verb which has two main functions. One is expressing speaker's volition, another their prediction or deduction.

We should be aware of the fact that 'future tense' sentences don't necessarily have to involve 'the time'. For example, 'I will never forget it'. This sentence doesn't express 'the time', does it? I think it's just one's volition.

After all, the learner's confusion around the tenses is mostly caused by their notions. They generally believe that the tenses are mainly used to express the time references of an event or an action. It might be true, but it's not enough to understand the tenses.

「褒めて伸びる子」にはやさしく接したほうが効果ですよねー。さて、point outの意味ですが・・

point out = to mention sth in order to give sb information about it or make them notice it.

「指摘する」という意味ですね。

It must be pointed out that this new drug is not a miracle cure.

こんな使い方もされます。また、そのまんま指を差すという行為のときにも使われます。

Aさんのgo offは「どこかへ出発するときのgo off」。Bさんのgo offは「～をやめる」のgo off。こちらは"I've gone off the idea..."のセットで覚えると良いかも。"the idea that.."と繋げていくことも可能です。

Hi. My name is rhb.
Thank you for looking at my website.
This blog is about English learning.
As a record of my studying, I'm going to write about vocabulary, grammar and phrases that I've done.

I've been studying English since January 2009.
So I'm not very good at writing in it, but if you like it I would be delighted.

By the way, 'warehouse' means facility supervised by customs authorities.
I read an article that a Japanese word 'Uwaya'(上屋) seems to be derived from 'warehouse'.
So I think it is a suitable word for this blog that stocks records of my English learning.
Then I named my blog after it.

こんにちは。rhbと申します。

このブログは英語学習についてのブログです。わたしの英語学習の記録として、単語、文法、フレーズなど、勉強したものを書き残していこうと思っています。2009年1月から英語の勉強を始めて1年ちょっとなので、まだまだ未熟ではありますが、よかったら見ていってください。

ちなみに、warehouseは「倉庫」という意味です。また、港にある税関倉庫を指す「上屋」という日本語はこの英単語がもとになってると読んだことがあります。そこで、英語学習の記録を残すブログの名前に向いているかなと考え、この名前にしてみました。

このブログの最初のエントリーは英語のオンライン辞書とリファレンスのまとめです。
