「褒めて伸びる子」にはやさしく接したほうが効果ですよねー。さて、point outの意味ですが・・
point out = to mention sth in order to give sb information about it or make them notice it.
「指摘する」という意味ですね。
It must be pointed out that this new drug is not a miracle cure.
こんな使い方もされます。また、そのまんま指を差すという行為のときにも使われます。

I've gone off the idea of a holiday in Scotland.
A: When are you going off on your trip?
（旅行にはいつお出かけになるんですか？）
B: I've gone off the idea of a holiday in Scotland.
（休暇でスコットランドに行くのはやめました。）
Aさんのgo offは「どこかへ出発するときのgo off」。Bさんのgo offは「～をやめる」のgo off。こちらは"I've gone off the idea..."のセットで覚えると良いかも。"the idea that.."と繋げていくことも可能です。

（句動詞が理解しにくいと考えるのはやめた。）
その他ではこんな使い方も。
He used to go off people quickly.
（彼はすぐに人を嫌うところがあった。）
go off = to leave a place, especially in order to do sth (Oxford)
go off(informal, BrE) = to lose interest in sb/sth; to stop liking sb/sth(Oxford)

I got up as soon as the alarm clock went off.
offを含んだPhrasal Verbsで一日を描写してみましょう。
I got up as soon as the alarm clock went off.
（アラーム時計が鳴ってすぐにわたしは起きた。）
鳴りっぱなしだとうるさいので、アラーム時計は止めます。
I turned off the alarm clock.
（アラームの音を止めた。）
でも、いつもよりも早くに鳴ってしまったようです。
My alarm clock went off an hour earlier than it was supposed to this morning.
（今朝は思っていた時刻よりも1時間早くアラームが鳴った。）
そのせいで少し寝不足だったため、昼間に少しうたた寝をしてしまいました。
I must have dozed off for a few minutes.
（わたしは数分間のあいだ、うたた寝していたに違いない。）
go off = start ringing (alarm)
turn off = stop a machine
than it was supposed to = 「思っていた～よりも」
doze off = fall asleep（うたた寝、まどろみ）
